Independence Day 2012

Happy Independence Day Pakistan. Its been 65 years... 65 years since we gained our Independence. 65 years since the birth of this great nation. 65 years since we earned the right to self rule and free will.

What have we done with this right to self rule and free will? Have we done justice to our country, our society, ourselves? Or have we squandered each and every opportunity, and embraced a free-for-all-brawl to see who can do more to line their pockets without any thought to the well-being of our fellow man?

My dear people, we just love to bash the government, the bureaucracy, and the national institutions for ineptness and failure. But have we ever seen our own conduct? Have we acted for the benefit of the society at large, or have we just acted like the selfish civil servants that we love to blame for the ills of the country?

These civil servants in the government and national institutions didn't just appear out of thin air. They are a part of us. Ordinary citizens go on to these posts and become the very thing they claim to hate. Sure, you can place all the blame on Zardari, but remember, you placed him there, and he is about to complete his full term as your President.

Instead of blaming Zardari and the government, take a good hard look in the mirror. What do you see? An honest person, or a greedy monster? The truth hurts, doesn't it? Yet we won't change. It is much easier to blame someone else instead of confronting the devil inside us.

Check any news channel, newspaper, or social media and you hear the talk of change, of a revolution, but the reality is this nothing more than a tempest in a teapot. Its all talk, just a load of hot air. Nothing will happen, and nothing will change, unless we change. Swallow the bitter pill and confront yourselves. Ask yourself why you have allowed yourself to become this shell of a human being, why you have backed yourself into a corner, why the tunnel seems endless and the light isn't in sight?

If only we change, and I mean truly change, then the situation will always seem bleak. Enough with the negativity. We claim to be independent, capable of self rule and free will, then lets stop talking about it, and do something about it. We have to change our behavior, our attitude, our approach for the better. That is the only way forward.

You want a bright future, you want a strong Pakistan, you want a better Pakistan? Make yourself better, and then you'll see how Pakistan changes and truly rises to become one of the greatest nations of the world. Inshallah!

Pakistan Zindabad! Long live the people...
